Or is it just a vehicle for selling ads? A good program should inform and engage the reader. Advertising is good, and editorial content in a program should support the advertising.

Some quick tips about editorial content and advertising:

•  A good rule is to not have two pages full of ads facing each other.
•  Editorial content should be surrounded by ads, so the reader will find a place to land when they open a two-page spread.
• Within two pages, at least half a page of editorial content is a good mix.

Balancing the production and advertising cost is important to make sure there are no suprises, you can even make money if you're savy balancing both.
